Saint Peter Claver

1580 - 1654

Feast Day - September 9

Patron Saint:  Slaves, African-Americans and Columbia

A Spanish-born missionary, Saint Peter Claver spent his religious life ministering to and evangelizing slaves in Cartagena, Columbia.

Driven by his compassion for the oppressed and awareness of the physical and emotional hardships intrinsic to slavery, he regularly awaited African slave ships entering the Columbian harbor in order to care for those on board.

Ultimately, he baptized and ministered to more than 300,000 slaves during 40 years of ministry.
