Saint Philip of Jesus

1572 - 1597

Feast Day - February 5

Patron Saint:  Mexico City

St Philip was the first native saint of the Americas and is the patron saint of Mexico City, where he was born.  As a teenager, he worked as a trader in the Philippines.  It was there that Saint Philip responded to the call to religious life and joined the Franciscans to work with the sick.  In 1596 Saint Philip boarded a Spanish-owned ship to take him back to Mexico where he was to be ordained as a priest.  The vessel was caught in a storm and wrecked along the coast of Japan.  Amid rumors that the Emperor of Spain had sent Philip and other missionaries aboard the chip as spies as part of the plot to conquer Japan, he was imprisoned and because a martyr after being crucified and stabbed with spears.
