At the age of 15, he joined the Capuchin friars and was ordained a priest in 1910.

Throughout his life, Saint Pio was known for his humility, obedience, and deep connection to the spiritual world. He was said to have experienced stigmata, the wounds of Christ, which he bore for 50 years until his death. This phenomenon drew widespread attention and pilgrims from around the world sought his counsel and sought healing from him.

He displayed a profound compassion for the sick and suffering, and established the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (Home for the Relief of Suffering) to provide medical care for the poor.

His reputation for holiness and miracles grew, and he became one of the most popular and venerated saints of the 20th century. He passed away on September 23, 1968, and was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 2002.
